Aquifer_Sensitivity_Near_Surface_IN is a raster data layer that displays a reclassified raster data layer of estimated rates of diffuse groundwater recharge to the water table in shallow aquifers in Indiana (see Aquifer_Recharge_Near_Surface_IN). The goal of this project was to use an objective, reproducible methodology to rank aquifer sensitivity in shallow aquifers based on estimates of diffuse groundwater recharge rates. To achieve the aquifer sensitivity ranking, the groundwater recharge rates were classified by standard deviation, and the classifications were then compared to databases of contaminants in groundwater to validate the classification.

Purpose:
This data set was created to support decision making in Indiana where knowledge of the sensitivity to aquifer contamination is desired.

The attribute accuracy varies by the original source scale of the data used to calculate each field. Many high resolution data inputs used to calculate each field were degraded in scale when mean values or centroid samples were taken to represent the independent landscape variables at a resolution of 100 m.

Process_Description:
The recharge rate estimates (2015) for Indiana were classified by standard deviation in the Symbology editor of ESRI ArcMap, resulting in five categories. The categories are "Very Low" (sensitivity to contamination, equating to very low recharge rates: 0.0-0.8 inches/year), "Low" (sensitivity to contamination, equating to low recharge rates: 0.08-4.3 inches/year), "Moderate" (sensitivity to contamination, equating to moderate recharge rates: 4.3-6.1 inches/year), "High" (sensitivity to contamination, equating to high recharge rates: 6.1-9.7 inches/year), and "Very High" (sensitivity to contamination, equating to very high recharge rates: >9.7 inches/year). Recharge rates fall within 0-14 inches per year in the estimates that resulted from a multiple regression analysis. To validate the classification, databases (Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana Geological Survey) were used to identify the recharge rates and sensitivity classifications of aquifers already compromised by contamination. The highest density of contaminated sites was in the "very high" category, whereas the lowest density of contamination was in the very low, low, and moderate categories. Dissolved metals were found in every classification, likely at landfills and leaking underground storage tanks, highlighting that the conceptual model for the recharge estimates was for diffuse flow from the surface, and not for point sources of contamination from introduction into the subsurface.
