CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities. By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications."

"CoCoRaHS has several goals (as stated in our mission statement).

1. Provide accurate high-quality precipitation data for our many end users on a timely basis;

2. Increasing the density of precipitation data available throughout the country by encouraging volunteer weather observing;

3. Encouraging citizens to have fun participating in meteorological science and heightening their awareness about weather;

4. Providing enrichment activities in water and weather resources for teachers, educators and the community at large to name a few."

"Each time a rain, hail or snow storm crosses your area, volunteers take measurements of precipitation from as many locations as possible (see equipment). "Hydrologists and climatologists often use the "Water Year" calendar for tracking water resources. While the definition may vary regionally, a common definition of "water year" is October 1 through September 30th. In the cool months, evaporation rates are very low, snow accumulates in cold regions, storms tend to be widespread, and most areas see accumulation of moisture in the soil. Then comes spring with it's accompanying snow melt and high runoff from mountainous regions and higher latitudes. The summer months bring high evaporation rates. Precipitation (much from thunderstorms) becomes much more localized. Soil moisture may be gradually depleted during summer as vegetation uses large volumes of water. Streams run slower and clearer. CoCoRaHS recommends this water year calendar for tabulating precipitation amounts."

IGWS personnel downloaded the "Indiana CoCoRaHS Water Year Summary" reports for all water-years between 2010 and 2018 (nine Microsoft Excel files named "IN_WYS_2010.XLS," "IN_WYS_2011.XLS," "IN_WYS_2012.XLS," "IN_WYS_2013.XLS," "IN_WYS_2014.XLS," "IN_WYS_2015.XLS," "IN_WYS_2016.XLS," "IN_WYS_2017.XLS," and "IN_WYS_2018.XLS") from the Indiana CoCoRaHS Nework website (<https://www.cocorahs.org/WaterYearSummary/>) on March 13, 2019.

Each Excel spreadsheet was loaded into Esri ArcMap 10.6 and was spatially displayed using the latitude and longitude coordinates (decimal degrees, WGS 1984) for each station. The data were then reprojected to UTM Zone 16 North, NAD 1983 coordinate system, and then exported to point feature classes within an Esri file geodatabase named "PRECIPITATION_NETWORK_TOTALS_2010-2018WYS_COCORAHS_IN.GDB." Each feature class was then renamed as follows to conform to internal naming conventions of the IGWS (along with the total number of stations reported for the given water-year):

Each of the nine point feature classes were loaded into Esri ArcMap and the attribute field named "DaysCovered" was used to select only those stations that reported observations of daily precipitation for 301 days or more for a given water-year. Esri ArcToolbox "Spatial Analysis Tools > Interpolation > Spline with Barriers" was then used to create individual raster datasets showing estimated total annual precipitation (using attribute field "PTotSum") for each given water-year using these selected stations. The Esri polygon shapefile named "Landsurvey_State_Poly_IN.SHP" (available on the IndianaMap Layer Gallery as "PLSS State Boundary," <https://maps.indiana.edu/layerGallery.html?category=PLSS> ) was used as the constraining barrier. A smoothing value of 1 was used and a 1000-meter cell size was chosen for each output raster dataset. Each raster dataset was then imported to the file geodatabase named "PRECIPITATION_NETWORK_TOTALS_2010-2018WYS_COCORAHS_IN.GDB" and renamed as follows to conform to internal naming conventions of the IGWS (the total number of stations that reported on 301 days or more for the given water-year are also provided):
