"ASOS Network - The Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) is considered to be the flagship automated observing network. Located at airports, the ASOS stations provide essential observations for the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DOD). The primary function of the ASOS stations are to take minute-by-minute observations and generate basic weather reports.[1] Observations from the ASOS network are nationally monitored for quality 24 hours per day. Depending on the trouble, maintenance can be performed on the same day."

"The Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS) program is a joint effort of the National Weather Service (NWS), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Defense (DOD). The ASOS systems serves as the nation's primary surface weather observing network. ASOS is designed to support weather forecast activities and aviation operations and, at the same time, support the needs of the meteorological, hydrological, and climatological research communities."

"With the largest and most modern complement of weather sensors, ASOS has significantly expanded the information available to forecasters and the aviation community. The ASOS network has more than doubled the number of full-time surface weather observing locations. ASOS works non-stop, updating observations every minute, 24 hours a day, every day of the year."

"Getting more information on the atmosphere, more frequently and from more locations is the key to improving forecasts and warnings. Thus, ASOS information will help the NWS to increase the accuracy and timeliness of its forecasts and warnings--the overriding goal of the NWS modernization."

"The primary concern of the aviation community is safety, and weather conditions often threaten that safety. A basic strength of ASOS is that critical aviation weather parameters are measured where they are needed most: airport runway touchdown zone(s)."

"ASOS detects significant changes, disseminating hourly and special observations via the networks. Additionally, ASOS routinely and automatically provides computer-generated voice observations directly to aircraft in the vicinity of airports, using FAA ground-to-air radio. These messages are also available via a telephone dial-in port. ASOS observes, formats, archives and transmits observations automatically. ASOS transmits a special report when conditions exceed preselected weather element thresholds, e.g., the visibility decreases to less than 3 miles."

Purpose:

IGWS personnel downloaded a comma-delimited text file named "IN_ASOS_NETWORK.TXT" from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet (Iowa State University) on March 5, 2019. IN_ASOS_NETWORK.TXT was loaded into Esri ArcMap 10.6 and was spatially displayed using the latitude and longitude coordinates (decimal degrees, WGS 1984) for each station. The data were then exported to an Esri point shapefile format, reprojected to UTM Zone 16 North, NAD 1983 coordinate system, and then renamed to "WEATHER_STATION_NETWORK_ASOS_IN.SHP" to conform to internal naming conventions of the IGWS.

IGWS personnel extracted additional attribute information for each station in the Indiana ASOS network from the website of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) showing "Surface Weather Observation Stations (ASOS/AWOS) in Indiana" ( <http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/?state=IN> ). The attribute data were saved as a comma-delimited text file named "ASOS_IN_FAA_ADDITIONAL_ATTRIBUTES.TXT." Esri ArcMap was then used to edit WEATHER_STATION_NETWORK_ASOS_IN.SHP by adding additional attribute fields named "FAA_ID," "FAA_NAME," "FAA_Freq," "FAA_Ph," "FAA_Type," and "FAA_URL" and each new field was populated with the information from ASOS_IN_FAA_ADDITIONAL_ATTRIBUTES.TXT.

NOTE: The FAA list contained a total of 53 sites for the Indiana ASOS network, in comparison to the 49 sites reported by the IEM. The FAA list did not contain attribute information for four sites that are found on the IEM network list ("IEM ID and IEM Name" = "4I7 - Greencastle," "GUS - Grissom AFB/Peru," "HBE - Himsel Aaf," and "1II - Nineveh").

Also, the FAA list contained eight Indiana ASOS sites that were not found on the IEM network list and are therefore not included in WEATHER_STATION_NETWORK_ASOS_IN.SHP. ("FAA ID and FAA Name" = "KBFR - Bedford - Virgil Grissom," "KCEV - Connersville - Mettel," "KSMD - Fort Wayne - Smith Field Airport," "K2R2 - Hendricks - Gordon Graham," "K8A4 - Indianapolis Heliport," "KUMP - Indianapolis Metro," "KOVO - North Vernon," and "KSER - Seymour - Freeman").
